Halving the fuel excise is not enough. Scrap it.
There is a world oil price, and then there is a 54 cent tax Canberra adds on top. The first is the war and the shipping. The second is just a tax. Cutting it does not shrink supply.
Out here that is not a luxury. It is the farm tank, the school run, and the freight that puts food in the shops. People in the regions do not have a train. They drive because they have to.
Cheaper petrol does not send interest rates up. Fuel is in the inflation number the Reserve Bank watches. Taking tax off the bowser brings that number down.
If hospitals and roads only survive by slugging every regional trip, look at the spending. The problem is not the motorist.
Scrap the excise.
